MUSIC AT KERNERSVILLE MORAVIAN CHURCH
A Tradition of Worship Through Music

Music has been at the heart of worship at Kernersville Moravian Church for generations. Through our choir, band, handbells or historic pipe organs, music connects us in faith, deepens our worship experience, and brings our congregation together in song.
At KMC music is welcoming and inclusive. Whether you’re an experienced musician or just love to sing, there’s a place for you in our musical community.
- Prelude to worship services
- Moving chorales played at funerals in God’s Acre
- Easter Sunrise Service which includes a beautiful and deeply spiritual procession that begins at the sanctuary and moves toward the graveyard.
Our band also participates in regional Moravian band gatherings, joining fellow musicians from other churches in a shared celebration of faith and music. Though not all are formally trained, their unity and devotion create a sound that is both powerful and uplifting.

Paula Owens
Our Music Director, Paula Owens, has been a musician since childhood. In her teenage years she joined her church’s band and would go on professionally to become a music teacher. She’s spent the majority of her life involved in church music and is a natural choice as the director for our choir and handbells.

Cathryn Cabaniss
Our Band Director, Cathryn Cabaniss, has been with us for 22 years. She has taught and played music professionally for much of her life, including playing with her husband Mike — who is also a music teacher and musician. (Mike also plays in our band and helps write and arrange music.) More recently, Cathryn has also played alongside her son Jimmy, who is now an accomplished musician himself.
MUSIC IN WORSHIP

Moravian liturgy: spoken word and music intertwine during service
- Pastor-led and largely choral.
- Provide a structured yet expressive way to engage in worship, reflecting the enduring role of music in Moravian faith.
Beyond the weekly worship services, music plays a special role in our most cherished traditions, particularly the lovefeast.
- Held on Christmas Eve, on the church’s anniversary, and at other times during the year, the lovefeast is a time of scripture, song, and fellowship.
- The congregation gathers to share in the tradition of coffee and sweet buns, served by dieners in a practice that dates back generations. Music fills the sanctuary, with hymns, seasonal carols, and occasional instrumental features adding to the spirit of the service.
WAYS TO BE INVOLVED

For our youngest members, music is introduced through the Junior Choir, a joyful program for children ages three to eight.
- Meeting on Sundays after worship as part of Godly Play, the Junior Choir provides an opportunity for children to engage in worship through song, fostering both musical growth and another connection to their faith.
- These early experiences help children understand that music is not just something performed—it is something that brings people together and makes worship come alive.

Integral to our worship is the Kernersville Moravian Church Choir, a volunteer group that welcomes anyone with a love for singing.
- Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings.
- No audition is required to join.
- No formal musical training is required to join.
For those who prefer a lighter commitment, our summer choir provides an opportunity to participate in a relaxed and accessible way.
- Traditional hymns during services
- Liturgical responses
- Special music during the Lovefeast
HISTORICAL ROOTS

At the center of many of our musical traditions is the grand pipe organ, an instrument that fills the sanctuary with its rich, resonant sound.
Built by the J. F. Nordlie Company in the early 2000’s, this organ plays an essential role in our services, enhancing congregational hymns, choir anthems, and moments of quiet reflection. A second, near-replica of the Tannenbaum organ resides in our historic chapel.
Even today, some of the music used in our services comes from the work of Wayne Leupold, a former organist who edited and arranged much of the church’s music, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to enrich our worship.
